“Euromaidan Activist to Officials: Stop the Niceties, We’re on the Verge of War” (translation by William Risch, Georgia College)
At their Sunday meeting, members of the Kharkiv Euromaidan called on Ukrainian officials and the police to deal firmly with separatists.
Kharkivians assembled on Constitution Square in Kharkiv on the afternoon of April 27. As Radio Svoboda reports, people held Ukrainian national flags and posters with the slogans “Putin is a bloody murderer! Stop!,” “We won’t give up without a fight!,” and “I’m ashamed for my Russian homeland!.”
The meeting took place under the slogan, “Ukraine should be strong,” said Volodymyr Chystylin, one of the Kharkiv Euromaidan organizers.
“We are against separatism, stop the niceties with separatists, you need to act,” he said. “We ask that the government finally bring order to our city and to the country in general. This weak position of theirs is leading to an even greater escalation of the crisis. We are on the verge of war with Russia.”
“We are constantly forced to defend ourselves,” he added. “They tell us that it’s dangerous, let’s not have a Euromaidan. There’s a sense that no one – not the government, not civic organizations – is interested in having Kharkivians express their views in peaceful protests.”
